While the possibility of enacting a sui generis Biobank Act has been debated in Germany at great length, as of yet the country has not implemented any biobankspecific legislation. Instead, oversight is available via a network of research and privacy laws, including those of the European Union.

The Nationale Kohorte, Germany's large-scale, population-based epidemiological research biobank, is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, and there are currently registered bio-banks throughout Germany. The current system, including the structure and study design of the Nationale Kohorte, privileges the protection of personal information even at the cost of socially desirable research; it remains to be seen if forthcoming legislation will shift this balance.

Assessing the impact participation in science journalism activities has on scientific literacy among high school students. Over the course of a school year students participated in a variety of activities culminating in the production of science news articles for Scijourner, a regional print and online high school science news magazine.

Participating teachers and Sci Journ team members collaboratively developed activities focused on five aspects of scientific literacy: placing information into context, recognizing relevance, evaluating factual accuracy, use of multiple credible sources and information seeking processes. This study details the development process for the Scientific Literacy Assessment SLA including validity and reliability studies, evaluates student scientific literacy using the SLA, examines student SLA responses to provide a description of high school students' scientific literacy, and outlines implications of the findings in relation to the National Research Council's A Framework for K Science Education: Practices, Crosscutting Concepts, and Core Ideas and classroom science teaching practices.

Scientifically literate adults acting as experts in the assessment development phase informed the creation of a scoring guide that was used to analyze student responses. Experts tended to draw on both their understanding of science concepts and life experiences to formulate answers; paying close attention to scientific factual inaccuracies, sources of information, how new information fit into their view of science and society as well as targeted strategies for information seeking.

Pleural effusion management is a common clinical situation associated with numerous pulmonary, pleural or extra-pulmonary diseases. A systematic approach is needed to enable a rapid diagnosis and an appropriate treatment.

Pleural fluid analysis is the first step to perform which allows a presumptive diagnosis in most cases. Otherwise, further analysis of the pleural fluid or thoracic imaging or pleural biopsy may be necessary. This review aims at highlighting the important elements of the work-up required by a pleural effusion.

After a brief overview of the concept of electromagnetic chirality, this paper deals with a numerical simulation of isotropic composites with metallic chiral inclusions: computations of permittivity, permeability and chirality parameter as functions of frequency are presented. The theoretical results are, step by step, compared with measurements of chiral composites at microwave frequencies. The introduction of chiral inclusions seems to make impedance matching possible and may lead to attractive shields with lower reflectivity and larger bandwidth.

However the optimization of material characteristics necessary to get a specific absorber remains a difficult task. This qualitative, multiple case study examines five teachers' experiences with a National Science Foundation-funded professional development PD program focused on science literacy. Using a three dimensional conceptual framework combining transformative learning theory, communities of practice, and sociocultural conceptions of identity it explores: the ways the "Science Literacy through Science Journalism" Sci Journ project built professional community and influenced teacher learning; the influence of the project on participating science teachers' professional identities, knowledge, and classroom practices; and the ways teachers were or were not transformed by participation in the project.

To this end, data from surveys and phenomenological interviews were analyzed through qualitative textual analysis and narrative analysis. Four of the teachers experienced a change in their stories to live by, aka, an identity shift. Three predominant themes emerged across these cases. These included a changed conceptualization of science literacy, the importance of student engagement and authenticity, and the value of Sci Journ 's professional development and community.

The changed conceptualization of science literacy was particularly salient as it challenged these teachers' assumptions, led them to rethink how they teach science literacy, and also influenced them to re-evaluate their teaching priorities beyond the PD. Consequently, this study concludes that PD efforts should focus as much, or more, on influencing teachers' ideas regarding what and how they teach and less on teaching strategies.

A close comparison between two teachers' diverging experiences with the program showed that student engagement played a significant role in teachers' perceptions of the value of project, suggesting that whether or not teachers sustain a new practice is closely tied to their students' feedback. Additionally, this analysis showed that a teacher's individualized needs and sense of efficacy.

Calculations of dose distributions using a neural network model.

The main goal of external beam radiotherapy is the treatment of tumours, while sparing, as much as possible, surrounding healthy tissues. In order to master and optimize the dose distribution within the patient, dosimetric planning has to be carried out. Thus, for determining the most accurate dose distribution during treatment planning, a compromise must be found between the precision and the speed of calculation. Current techniques, using analytic methods, models and databases, are rapid but lack precision.

Enhanced precision can be achieved by using calculation codes based, for example, on Monte Carlo methods. However, in spite of all efforts to optimize speed methods and computer improvements , Monte Carlo based methods remain painfully slow. A newer way to handle all of these problems is to use a new approach in dosimetric calculation by employing neural networks.

Neural networks Wu and Zhu Phys. This permits us to obtain quick and accurate results during clinical treatment planning. Quantum criticality provides a means to understand the apparent non-Fermi liquid phenomena in strongly correlated metals. Heavy fermion metals have emerged as a prototype system; many of them explicitly display a magnetic QCP.

Experiments have shown that the quantum critical behavior is much richer than expected. One surprise came from neutron scattering, which found that the spin dynamics is anomalous not only near the antiferromagnetic wavevectors but also essentially everywhere in the Brillouin zone.

In this talk, I will review the experiments and describe our theoretical work on the subject [1,2,3]. The notion of "local criticality" will be introduced and will be argued to apply to the heavy fermions. Some broader implications of the results will also be discussed. Si, S. Rabello, K. Ingersent, and J. Smith, Nature , Si, J. Smith and K. Ingersent, Int. B13, Smith and Q. Si, Phys. B61, Impact of a surgical site infection SSI surveillance program in orthopedics and traumatology.

Surveillance of surgical site infections SSI is a priority. One of the fundamental principles for the surveillance of SSI is based on receiving effective field feedback retro-information. The aim of this study was to report the results of a program of SSI surveillance and validate the hypothesis that there is a correlation between creating a SSI surveillance program and a reduction in SSI.

The protocol was based on the weekly collection of surveillance data obtained directly from the different information systems in different departments. A delay of 3 months was established before extraction and analysis of data and information from the surgical teams. Since the end of , surgical procedures were evaluated rate of inclusion A total of days of hospitalization have been saved since the beginning of the surveillance system.

Our surveillance system has three strong points: follow-up is continuous, specifically adapted to orthopedic traumatology and nearly exhaustive. The extraction of data directly from hospital information systems effectively improves the collection of data on surgical procedures. Level III.

Although the plague has practically disappeared from Europe since the beginning of the 20th century, it is still present in everyone's memory. Owing to three pandemics, it has left an indelible mark on mankind and has given rise to many popular phrases, paintings, books or more recently movies and video games.

After a brief description of the plague as a disease, we will try to trace the history of the plague through some of the works of art it inspired and then to show how the plague is still haunting our collective memory. Hereditary angioedema is a rare disease, often diagnosed with delay because of a heterogeneous clinical presentation.

Before diagnosis, patients frequently present subcutaneous edema or abdominal pains during many years. Laryngeal edema can be life-threatening. Hereditary angioedema may impair the quality of life of the patients and their social and professional life.

It is important that the physicians recognize and treat the disease as soon as possible after the first attacks. Since the past five years, new drugs developed for hereditary angioedema have changed dramatically the outcome of this disorder. The objective of this review is to detail the new therapeutic guidelines. Thrombotic microangiopathies TMA define a syndrome characterized by the association of microangiopathic haemolytic anaemia with schistocytes, peripheral thrombocytopenia, and organ injury of variable severity.

Recent advances in the pathophysiology of those two diseases, which include in HUS the identification of a deregulation of the alternative complement pathway, and in TTP a severe deficiency in ADAMTS, allowed to develop specific, pathophysiology-based therapies. Therefore, rituximab and eculizumab tends to be increasingly used, and there is an urgent need to define consensual modes of administration at the international level, as well as common definitions of response evaluation and follow-up explorations.

Molecular spectroscopy for producing ultracold ground-state NaRb molecules. Recently, we have successfully created an ultracold sample of absolute ground-state NaRb molecules by two-photon Raman transfer of weakly bound Feshbach molecules. Here we will present the detailed spectroscopic investigations on both the excited and the rovibrational ground states for finding the two-photon path.

In the ground state, the pure nuclear hyperfine levels have been clearly resolved, which allows us to create molecules in the absolute ground state directly with Raman transfer. Several cases of hearing loss induced by hydroxychloroquine have been reported in the literature but the role of hydroxychloroquine still remains debated.

We report the first case, to our knowledge, of hearing loss induced by hydroxychloroquine with a positive re challenge in a woman treated for systemic lupus. An analysis of the French pharmacovigilance database allowed to identify 23 additional cases of hearing loss in patients treated with hydroxychloroquine and, among them, 8 had systemic lupus. Despite an excellent tolerance and high efficacy-side effect ratio, this case report adds some evidence for an otoxicity of hydroxychloroquine.

Its focus is on the protection of the environment and is part of the University of Poitiers, one of the oldest universities in Europe. GFP is an annual conference where the latest developments in the field of pesticide research are presented. The topics most commonly discussed mainly concern environmental quality, monitoring, fate, and transfer of pesticides in the environment or risks associated with use of pesticides, but every year a key theme sets the tone.

For this 42nd edition, the theme "Innovative strategies for plant protection" was retained. The French medicine pricing committee CEPS , a governmental and inter-institutional body exercises essential competences for the regulation of the economy of the reimbursable drugs in France. It provides a good example of administered price regulation. It also supervises the proper use of products control of promotion, conventional control of sales volumes.

Finally, it regulates the annual envelope of drug expenditures by means of discounts paid by pharmaceutical companies. The article presents the legal criteria and the doctrine of price setting used in France. It details the types of market access contracts concluded by the CEPS. It specifies the conditions governing the annual envelope of expenditures on reimbursable medicines. Evolutionary medicine represents an innovative approach deriving from evolutionary biology.

It includes the initial Darwin's view, its actualization in the light of progresses in genetics and also dissident theories i. This approach enables us to reconsider the pathophysiology of numerous diseases, as for instance, infection, and our so-called diseases of civilization especially obesity, type 2 diabetes, allergy or cancer.

Evolutionary medicine may also improve our knowledge regarding inter-individual variation in susceptibility to disease or drugs. Furthermore, it points out the impact of our behaviors and environment on the genesis of a series of diseases. Nowadays, numerous manufacturers benefit from this technology to produce their medical devices and some hospitals have also purchased 3D printers. In this context, the aim of the present study was to study the distribution and the use of 3D printing in French hospitals in order to its main features in surgery.

By conducting a national survey, we targeted hospitals equipped with 3D printers and those using external providers to benefit from this technology. Forty-seven hospitals were identified as using 3D printing including eight equipped with in-house 3D printers. This work gives us a first picture of 3D printing for hospital use in France and it raises questions about hospital pharmacists' involvement in 3D printed medical device production. It is associated with symptoms of cerebral hypoperfusion that are worse when upright and improve in supine position.

Patients have an intense fatigue with a high incidence on quality of life. This syndrome can be explained by many pathophysiological mechanisms. It can be associated with Ehlers-Danlos disease and some autoimmune disorders. The treatment is based on nonpharmacological measures and treatment with propranolol, fludrocortisone or midodrine. Cytomegalovirus-associated thrombosis has been extensively reported in the medical literature, mainly in immune-compromised patients.

However, the association with splenic infarcts has rarely been reported. We report a year-old Caucasian and immunocompetent woman who presented with a splenic infarction during a primary infection with CMV. The differential diagnostic ruled out embolic, hematologic, gastrointestinal and coagulation disorders. The outcome was favorable with symptomatic treatment.

A primary infection with CMV must be added to the diagnostic work-up in the presence of a febrile splenic infarction, especially when it is associated with a biological mononucleosis reaction. This paper presents an analysis of a Lemierre's syndrome is a rare and severe sepsis that can rapidly lead to a life-threatening condition in the absence of early management. This syndrome described at the beginning of the 20th century combines oropharyngeal infection complicated with septic thrombosis of the internal jugular vein and septic emboli predominantly pulmonary.

Fusobacterium necrophorum, anaerobic germ, Gram negative bacillus is the main germ in this "necrobacillosis". The diagnosis is should be confirmed precociously with cervicothoracic CT-scan, reference exam, and bacteriological examinations especially in atypical forms.

Its management consists of an emergency antibiotic treatment, combining a third-generation cephalosporin or a betalactam with metronidazole, anticoagulant therapy to be reserved for high-risk situations related to thrombosis. Surgical treatment may be required.

Guidelines for the treatment of hemorrhoids short report. Hemorrhoids are a common medical problem that is often considered as benign. We present a short report of these recommendations. Surgery should be the last resort, and the patient well informed of the surgical alternatives, including the possibility of elective ambulatory surgery, if appropriate.

Postoperative pain should be prevented by the systematic implementation of a pudendal block and multimodal use of analgesics. Mondor's disease is a rare superficial thrombophlebitis, historically involving the thoracic venous system of women. However, it can occur in both gender and all over the skin. We report a year-old man with type one diabetes who presented with a thrombosis of the superficial dorsal vein of the penis that he treated as a fungal infection.

Pathogenesis and treatment of Mondor's disease remain incompletely dominated. Some predisposing factors have been highlighted in the literature. It might be interesting to add diabetes, due to its frequent pelvic problems leading to a potential venous inflammatory trigger. Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura TTP is a life-threatening disorder.

We report a year-old man who presented with acute myocardial infarction and received clopidogrel therapy. He developed acute TTP ten days after clopidogrel onset. Imputability of the drug was demonstrated during a reintroduction test. Complete remission was obtained after 24 plasma exchange sessions and adjunction of corticosteroids.

Drug-induced TTP are probably immunologic, as was demonstrated in our patient. Clinicians should be aware of this possible uncommon adverse effect of clopidogrel because prompt therapy is imperative for life saving. High oxygen affinity hemoglobins. High oxygen affinity hemoglobins are responsible for rare and heterogeneous autosomic dominant genetic diseases.

They cause pure erythrocytosis, sometimes accountable for hyperviscosity and thrombosis, or hemolysis. Differential diagnoses must be first ruled out. The diagnosis is based on the identification of a decreased P50, and their possible characterization by cation exchange-high performance liquid chromatography and capillary electrophoresis. Finally, genetic studies of the responsible globin chain gene will confirm the mutation. The prognosis mainly relies on the P50 decrease rate and on the hemoglobin cooperativity impairment.

Disease management should be personalized, and it should primarily depend on smoking cessation and physical activity. Phlebotomy and platelet aggregation inhibitors' prescriptions can be discussed. There is no contraindication to flights, high-altitude conditions, or pregnancy. Nevertheless, blood donation must be prohibited. Sarcoidosis is a systemic granulomatous disorder of unknown cause.

Apparition or flare of previously diagnosed sarcoidosis following hematopoietic stem cell transplantation HSCT has rarely been reported. We report a year-old woman who presented a radiological flare of sarcoidosis post-autologous stem cell transplantation for a POEMS syndrome. Imaging findings and lymph node histology, which revealed non-caseating granuloma, were consistent with the sarcoidosis diagnosis. The patient was asymptomatic and was kept free of treatment.

Sarcoidosis must be considered ahead of compatible clinicoradiological presentation occurring after HSCT. Sarcoidosis can mimic metastatic cancer or lymphatic relapse. Tissue biopsies and exclusion of differential diagnosis of granuloma diseases are warranted to confirm sarcoidosis diagnosis. The most common OIs are, in descending order: aspergillosis, cryptococcosis, and mycobacterial infections. Overall, clinical presentation, treatment, and outcome are identical to that occur in other conditions complicated with the occurrence of OIs.

However, some atypical presentations of OIs can mimic sarcoidosis exacerbation and misdiagnosis may lead clinicians to increase immunosuppression, causing worsening of the OI. The meticulous collection of patient's history along with factors differentiating OI from sarcoidosis exacerbation is key factor to optimally manage these patients.

Electric-field control of spin waves in multiferroic BiFeO3: Theory. We calculate the magnon spectra due to each of these interactions and show that only one of them is consistent with experimental data.

At high electric fields, this interaction induces a phase transition to a homogeneous state, and the multi-magnon spectra will fuse into two magnon frequencies. We discuss the possible microscopic mechanisms responsible for this novel interaction and the prospect for applications in magnonics.

Final closure of a low level waste disposal facility. The low-level radioactive waste disposal facility operated by the Agence Nationale pour la Gestion des Dechets Radioactifs near La Hague, France was opened in and is scheduled for final closure in The last waste package was received in June The site closure consists of covering the disposal structures with a multi-layer impervious cap system to prevent rainwater from infiltrating the waste isolation system.

The bill passed in April by the German parliament aims to confer democratic legitimacy on the German Ethics Committee deutscher Ethikrat which has replaced the former National Ethics Committee nationaler Ethikrat set up in This law results from a wide debate which began in within the political parties about the role in democracy of the bodies charged with advising the people's representatives in the areas of biotechnology and modern medicine. In this article, the author explains why it was necessary to confer a certain democratic legitimacy on the new Ethics Committee and analyses the relation that exists between the democratic principle, the work of this type of committee and the national institutional structure retained to stimulate the debate and advise the political decision-makers, and even to prepare legislation concerning bioethics.

Rapid desensitization allows secure administration of a drug and is indicated when there is no therapeutic alternative. After a clinical flare splenomegaly, adenopathies despite treatment with tocilizumab, anakinra and valganciclovir, the reintroduction of rituximab was decided, according to the rapid desensitization protocol. Rapid desensitization is a promising method for the pursuit of rituximab therapy after a hypersensitivity reaction and should be considered in patients with no acceptable therapeutic alternative.

From dipolar to multipolar interactions between ultracold Feshbach molecules. Using the multipolar expansion of electrostatic and magnetostatic potential energies, we characterize the long-range interactions between two weakly-bound diatomic molecules, taking as an example the paramagnetic Er2 Feshbach molecules which were produced recently. The interaction between atomic magnetic dipoles gives rise to the usual R-3 leading term of the multipolar expansion, where R is the intermolecular distance.

We show that additional terms scaling as R-5, R-7 and so on also appear, which are strongly anisotropic with respect to the orientation of the molecules. These terms can be seen as effective molecular multipole moments reflecting the spatial extension of the molecules which is non-negligible compared to R. Spontaneous actin dynamics in contractile rings. Networks of polymerizing actin filaments are known to be capable to self-organize into a variety of structures.

For example, spontaneous actin polymerization waves have been observed in living cells in a number of circumstances, notably, in crawling neutrophils and slime molds. During later stages of cell division, they can also spontaneously form a contractile ring that will eventually cleave the cell into two daughter cells.

We present a framework for describing networks of polymerizing actin filaments, where assembly is regulated by various proteins. It can also include the effects of molecular motors. We show that the molecular processes driven by these proteins can generate various structures that have been observed in contractile rings of fission yeast and mammalian cells.

We discuss a possible functional role of each of these patterns. Organophosphorus coumpounds OP are toxic chemicals mainly used for agricultural purpose such as insecticides and were also developed and used as warfare nerve agents. OP are inhibitors of acetylcholinesterase, a key enzyme involved in the regulation of the central nervous system. Chemical, physical and biological approaches have been considered to decontaminate OP. This review summarizes the current and emerging strategies that are investigated to tackle this issue with a special emphasis on enzymatic remediation methods.

During the last decade, many studies have been dedicated to the development of biocatalysts for OP removal. Among these, recent reports have pointed out the promising enzyme SsoPox isolated from the archaea Sulfolobus solfataricus. Considering both its intrinsic stability and activity, this hyperthermostable enzyme is highly appealing for the decontamination of OP.

Antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies ANCA associated with infective endocarditis are a rare disorder. The condition can mimic primary systemic vasculitis i. Thus, a wrong diagnosis of valvular involvement related to primary systemic vasculitis can be made in patients exhibiting ANCA associated with infective endocarditis. Because treatment of both conditions is different, this wrong diagnosis will lead to dramatic consequences in these latter patients.

This review reports the state of knowledge and proposes an algorithm to follow when confronted to a possible case of ANCA associated with infective endocarditis. The most common causes of high anion gap metabolic acidosis HAGMA are lactic acidosis, ketoacidosis, and intoxications. Nevertheless, clinicians can be faced with unexplained HAGMA, with a need to look for less common etiologies. We describe a case of 5-oxoproline pyroglutamate acidosis due to chronic acetaminophen ingestion at therapeutic dose in a year-old inpatient.

The pathophysiology of this condition is detailed, with abnormalities in the gamma-glutamyl cycle due to acetaminophen ingestion and severe chronic morbidities, resulting in glutathione and cysteine deficiency and then accumulation of 5-oxoproline. In HAGMA, when usual causes have been excluded, 5-oxoproline acidosis should be suspected in patients with chronic morbidities and acetaminophen ingestion.

This diagnosis should be kept in mind because it generally resolves quickly with cessation of acetaminophen and administration of intravenous fluids. Bovine ketosis is a rare cause of metabolic acidosis. It is a starvation ketosis that appears in lactating woman. A year-old woman had a previous gastric surgery one month ago while breastfeeding her 6-month child. She presented to emergency with dyspnea, fatigue, weight loss and anorexia. The explorations revealed a serious metabolic acidosis with a high anion gap, for which all other causes have been eliminated.

A restrictive diet in lactating patients is a major risk of ketosis or bovine ketosis. Medico-surgical treatment of obesity during lactation seems unreasonable. Breastfeeding should be systematically sought before a medical and surgical management of obesity. With the spread of bariatric surgery, starvation ketosis is a cause of metabolic acidosis not to ignore. Approximately 1. We report an isolated dementia syndrome due to a meningeal relapse of acute promyelocytic leukaemia with favourable outcome after appropriate treatment.

A year-old woman, in remission of an acute promyelocytic leukaemia, presented a loss of autonomy for several months due to corticosubcortical dementia. Lumbar puncture showed blast cells indicating meningeal relapse of leukaemia. Intrathecal chemotherapy and arsenic trioxide obtained biological and molecular remission as well as restoration of normal cognitive functions. In patients with hematologic past history such as acute promyelocytic leukaemia, an isolated cognitive impairment should alert physicians to search for an isolated neuromeningeal relapse.

X-ray crystallography, an essential tool for the determination of thermodynamic relationships between crystalline polymorphs. After a short review of the controversies surrounding the discovery of crystalline polymorphism in relation to our present day understanding, the methods of how to solve the stability hierarchy of different polymorphs will be briefly discussed.

They involve either theoretical calculations, or, more commonly, experimental methods based on classical thermodynamics. The experimental approach is mainly carried out using heat-exchange data associated to the transition of one form into another. It will be demonstrated that work-related data associated to the phase transition should be taken into account and the role of X-ray crystallography therein will be discussed.

X-ray crystallography has become increasingly precise and can nowadays provide specific volumes and their differences as a function of temperature, and also as a function of pressure, humidity, and time. The heart involvement in systemic sclerosis is frequent and can touch various sites. The prognosis in the presence of heart disease is poor, but few data are available about its management. She has severe heart failure, supraventricular arrhythmias and symptomatic pericarditis, which required surgical intervention and immunosuppressive drugs steroids with rituximab.

Despite this treatment, she has persistent severe heart impaired function and intravenous immunoglobulins have been initiated. She experienced progressively the improvement of dyspnea, of heart systolic ejection fraction and decrease of Rodnan scale.

Our case illustrates a severe heart involvement in systemic sclerosis which have been improved by intravenous immunoglobulins. A Ganymede stellar occultation event. The field of view of the instruments was not large enough to include a reference unocculted body, hence sky fluctuations are the major noise source.

However, since the larger field of view allowed to observe simultaneously Ganymede and Callisto, we can use the latter as a reference unocculted body in order to cancel out telluric fluctuations. Results of the study verified that a distinct cross cerebro -cerebellar circuitry underlies verbal working memory.

However, a neural circuitry involving specialized brain areas in bilateral neocortical and bilateral cerebellar hemispheres subserving visual working memory is observed. Findings are discussed in the light of current models of working memory and data from related neuroimaging studies. Cerebro -meningeal infections in HIV-infected patients: a study of Background: Cerebro -meningeal pathology is common in human immunodeficiency virus HIV infection and the aetiology is often difficult to ascertain with certainty.

Selective cerebro -myocardial perfusion in complex congenital aortic arch pathology: a novel technique. Simultaneous cerebro -myocardial perfusion has been described in neonatal and infant arch surgery, suggesting a reduction in cardiac morbidity.

Here reported is a novel technique for selective cerebral perfusion combined with controlled and independent myocardial perfusion during surgery for complex or recurrent aortic arch lesions. Median age was 63 days 6 days years and median weight 4.

Weaning from cardiopulmonary bypass was achieved without inotropic support in three and with low dose in seven patients. One patient required veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. Four patients, body weight cerebro -myocardial perfusion is feasible in patients with complex or recurrent aortic arch disease, starting from premature newborn less than 2. The technique is as safe as previously reported methods of cerebro -myocardial perfusion and possibly more versatile.

At pH 2. Furthermore, we show that the apparent gate response was near-Nernstian under various conditions. The success of this study precedes the development of this technology in selectively sensing multiple ions in water with use of the appropriate polymer based membranes on arrays of devices. The precursor aluminate was derived from aluminum scrap.

XRD revealed that distinct phases of Al 2 O 3 were formed during thermal treatment. Moreover, it was observed that conditions of synthesis pH, aging time and temperature strongly affect the physicochemical properties of the alumina. Published by Elsevier B. Aortic arch repair in newborns and infants has traditionally been accomplished using a period of deep hypothermic circulatory arrest.

To reduce neurologic and cardiac dysfunction related to circulatory arrest and myocardial ischemia during complex aortic arch surgery, an alternative and novel strategy for cerebro -myocardial protection was recently developed, where regional low-flow perfusion is combined with controlled and independent coronary perfusion.

The aim of the present retrospective study was to assess short-term and mid-term results of selective and independent cerebro -myocardial perfusion in neonatal aortic arch surgery. From April to August , 28 consecutive neonates underwent aortic arch surgery under cerebro -myocardial perfusion.

There were 17 male and 11 female, with median age of 15 days days and median body weight of 3 kg 1. At latest follow-up, no patient showed signs of cardiac or neurologic dysfunction. The present experience shows that a strategy of selective and independent cerebro -myocardial perfusion is safe, versatile, and feasible in high-risk neonates with complex congenital arch pathology. Encouraging outcomes were noted in terms of cardiac and neurological function, with limited end-organ morbidity.

Cyanidin was extracted and purified from red cabbage which is a local plant in Thailand. The selectivity of this method was examined by regulating the pH of cyanidin solution operated together with masking agents. Results from naked-eye detection were evaluated by comparing with those of inductively coupled plasma ICP , and there was no significant difference noticed.

Moreover, the proposed method could be potentially applied for real water samples with simplicity, rapidity, low cost and environmental safety. Asadnia, Mohsen, E-mail: mohsen. A bunch-by-bunch longitudinal feedback system based on a programmable DSP architecture is used to study coupled-bunch motion and its sources. Modal growth and damping rates are measured via short 20 ms transient recordings for unstable and stable coupled-bunch modes. Data from steady-state measurements are used to identify unstable modes and noise-driven beam motion.

A novel impedance measurement technique is presented which reveals the longitudinal impedance as a function of frequency. This technique uses the measured synchronous phase and charge of every bucket to calculate the impedance seen by the beam at revolution harmonics. Optical power reflectance OR spectra are measured as a function of applied reverse bias at different tilt angles and temperatures. All spectra reveal a blue shift of the reflectivity dip upon applied voltage which evidences a negative electrorefraction of the electro-optic medium. As opposed to those modulators based on quantum—confined Stark effect, no increased absorption is observed at an applied bias, because the integrated intensity of the reflectivity dip in the OR spectra is virtually constant.

This indicates a low absorption loss with applied bias and consequently a high potential for the increased dynamic range of the related modulator. Taylor, S. Box; Becker, U. This study continues mechanistic development of heterogeneous electron transfer ET pathways at mineral surfaces in aquatic environments that enable the reduction U VI by surface-associated Fe II. Using computational molecular simulation within the framework of Marcus Theory, our findings highlight the importance of the configurations and interaction of the electron donor and acceptor species with the substrate, with respect to influencing its electronic structure and thereby the ability of semiconducting minerals to facilitate ET.

Conceptually possible longer-range ET by charge-hopping through surface Fe atoms was investigated to determine whether this indirect pathway is competitive with direct ET. The presence of the IS adsorbates appears to weaken the electronic coupling between underlying Fe ions within the surface, resulting in slower intra-surface ET 10—5 s—1 than expected in the bulk basal plane.

Our findings lay out first insights into donor-acceptor communication via a charge-hopping pathway through the surface for heterogeneous reduction of U VI by Fe II and help provide a basis. Endogenous sex steroids and cardio- and cerebro -vascular disease in the postmenopausal period. Cardio- and cerebro -vascular diseases are two leading causes of death and long-term disability in postmenopausal women. The acute fall of estrogen in menopause is associated with increased cardiovascular risk.

The relative contribution of androgen to this risk is also being recognized. The use of more sensitive assays for estradiol measurement and the study of receptor and carrier protein gene polymorphisms have provided some new information on the clinical relevance of endogenous sex steroids. We provide an update on the role of endogenous sex steroids on cardio- and cerebro -vascular disease in the postmenopausal period.

We performed a PubMed search using the terms 'endogenous estrogen', 'androgen', 'cardiovascular disease', ' cerebro -vascular disease', 'stroke', 'carotid artery disease', and 'subclinical atherosclerosis'. The majority of studies show a beneficial effect of endogenous estrogen on the vasculature; however, there are a few studies reporting the contrary. A significant body of literature has reported associations of endogenous estrogen and androgen with early markers of atherosclerosis and metabolic parameters.

Data on the relevance of endogenous sex steroids in heart disease and stroke are inconclusive. Most studies support a beneficial role of endogenous estrogens and, probably, an adverse effect of androgens in the vasculature in postmenopausal women.

However, the described associations may not always be considered as causal. It is possible that circulating estrogen might represent a marker of general health status or alternatively reflect the sum of endogenous androgens aromatized in the periphery. Elucidating the role of sex steroids in cardio- and cerebro -vascular disease remains an interesting field of future research.

Different cerebro -cerebellar circuits may be engaged for integrating aurally- and visually-presented information for VWM. The present fMRI study investigated load 2, 4, or 6 letters and modality auditory and visual dependent cerebro -cerebellar VWM activation using a Sternberg task. In the cerebellum, we noted a visual to auditory emphasis of function progressing from superior to inferior and from lateral to medial regions.

These results extend our previous findings of fMRI activation in cerebro -cerebellar networks during VWM, and demonstrate both modality dependent commonalities and differences in activations with increasing memory load. Cerebro -renal interactions: impact of uremic toxins on cognitive function.

Cognitive impairment CI associated with chronic kidney disease CKD has received attention as an important problem in recent years. Causes of CI with CKD are multifactorial, and include cerebrovascular disease, renal anemia, secondary hyperparathyroidism, dialysis disequilibrium, and uremic toxins UTs. Among these causes, little is known about the role of UTs. We therefore selected 21 uremic compounds, and summarized reports of cerebro -renal interactions associated with UTs.

Notably, most of the data were not obtained under uremic conditions; therefore, the impact and mechanism of each UT on cognition and central nervous system in uremic state remains unknown. At present, impacts and mechanisms of UT effects on cognition are poorly understood. Clarifying the mechanisms and establishing novel therapeutic strategies for cerebro -renal interaction dysfunction is expected to be subject of future research.

The cerebro -cerebellum: Could it be loci of forward models? It is widely accepted that the cerebellum acquires and maintain internal models for motor control. An internal model simulates mapping between a set of causes and effects. There are two candidates of cerebellar internal models, forward models and inverse models.

A forward model transforms a motor command into a prediction of the sensory consequences of a movement. In contrast, an inverse model inverts the information flow of the forward model. Despite the clearly different formulations of the two internal models, it is still controversial whether the cerebro -cerebellum, the phylogenetically newer part of the cerebellum, provides inverse models or forward models for voluntary limb movements or other higher brain functions.

In this article, we review physiological and morphological evidence that suggests the existence in the cerebro -cerebellum of a forward model for limb movement. We will also discuss how the characteristic input-output organization of the cerebro -cerebellum may contribute to forward models for non-motor higher brain functions. Fe II —Al III layered double hydroxides prepared by ultrasound-assisted co-precipitation method for the reduction of bromate. The Fe— Al LDHs particles were characterized by X-ray diffractometer, scanning electron microscopy and thermogravimetry—differential scanning calorimetry. It was found that ultrasound irradiation assistance promoted the formation of the hydrotalcite-like phase and then improved the removal efficiency of bromate. In addition, the effects of solid-to-solution ratio, contact time, initial bromate concentration, initial pH, coexisting anions on the bromate removal were investigated.

The results showed the bromate with an initial concentration of 1. When the initial bromate concentration was 7. The power in society is classified in: social, politic and state. The underlying pathophysiological background remains undetermined. We aimed to define trends in fetal growth and cerebro -placental Doppler flow, and to investigate the association between head growth and cerebro -placental flow in fetuses with CHD. CHD was categorized into 3 groups based on expected cerebral arterial oxygen saturation: normal, mild to moderately reduced, and severely reduced. Trends over time in Z-scores were analyzed using a linear mixed-effects model.

Expected cerebral arterial oxygen saturation in CHD was classified as normal in 44, mild to moderately reduced in 84 and severely reduced in 53 cases. HC z-scores showed a tendency to decrease until 23 weeks, then to increase until 33 weeks, followed by a decrease again in the late third trimester. AC increased progressively with advancing gestation. There were no associations between expected cerebral arterial oxygen saturation and fetal growth.

Fetal biometry and Doppler flow patterns are within normal ranges in fetuses with CHD, but show trends over time. Fetal head growth is not associated with the cerebral blood flow pattern or placental function and HC is not influenced by the cerebral arterial oxygen saturation.

Commentary on the management of type II odontoid process fractures in octogenarians: Article by Graffeo et al.

Establishing a clear treatment paradigm for octogenarians with type II odontoid fractures in hampered by a literature replete with level III articles. In the study by Graffeo et al. They studied multiple variables and utilized several scales [abbreviated injury scale AIS , injury severity score ISS , and the Glasgow coma scale GCS ] to determine the outcomes of nonoperative vs.

Graffeo et al. In the editorial by Falavigna, his major criticism of Graffeo's article was the marked disparity in the number of patients in the operative 17 patients vs. He further noted that few prior studies provided level I evidence, and that most, like this one, were level III analyses that did not "significantly" advance our knowledge as to whether to treat octogenarians with type II odontoid fractures operatively vs. A case report]. This descriptive report describes the case of a 50 year-old woman with bipolar disorder, whose maintenance therapy comprised risperidone, sodium valproato and lithium carbonate without any past occurrence of toxicity.

Her past medical history was significant for hypertension, cardiopathy and obesity. She presented with a 1-week history of fever, increasing confusion and slurred speech. At presentation, the patient was somnolent. CT brain scanning and lumbar puncture were negative for brain haemorrage or infection.

Lithium toxicity causes impairment of renal concentration and encephalopathy due to lithium recirculation, a mechanism responsible for the so-called cerebro -renal syndrome, where dialysis plays an important role in treatment. The patient was treated with continous veno-venous haemodiafiltration CVVHDF over 35 hours with gradual improvement of her general condition and efficacy of renal concentration.

Our case highlights a few important points. Haemodialysis is the treatment of choice to reduce the molecular mechanisms of lithium-related changes in urinary concentration and reinstate dopaminergic activity in the brain. The cerebellum plays important roles in sensori-motor and supramodal cognitive functions. We used resting-state functional connectivity magnetic resonance imaging in 56 children and adolescents 28 subjects with ASD, 28 typically developing subjects years old.

There were three main findings: 1 Total correlation analyses showed predominant cerebro -cerebellar functional overconnectivity in the ASD group; 2 partial correlation analyses that emphasized domain specificity sensori-motor vs. Our findings indicate that sensori-motor intrinsic functional connectivity is atypically increased in ASD, at the expense of connectivity supporting cerebellar participation in supramodal cognition.

Published by Elsevier Inc. Cerebro -retinal ischemia after bilateral occlusion of internal carotid artery. Six patients with occlusion of internal carotid arteries ICAs were prospectively followed during a mean period of 14 months. Prior to demonstration of occlusions, four patients suffered a mild stroke, and three isolated transient ischemic attacks TIAs or amaurosis fugax.

All patients remained alive and with an unchanged functional ability. During follow-up, one patient suffered amaurosis fugax and TIAs followed by a mild stroke, three suffered isolated TIAs or amaurosis fugax, two suffered reversible cerebro -retinal ischemia of more than 24 hours, and one remained symptomfree. In three cases, delayed cerebro -retinal ischemia distal to one of the occluded ICAs was systematically triggered by orthostatic, cardiogenic or iatrogenic hypotension, and resolved after adequate medical treatment or restoration of a functional collateral circulation by endarterectomy of a tightly stenosed ipsilateral external carotid artery ECA , suggesting hemodynamic phenomena.

In three cases, micro-emboli originating from a stump or an ulcerated ipsilateral common carotid artery and migrating through well-developed ECA collateral channels explained delayed episodes of ipsilateral TIAs or amaurosis fugax, which disappeared in two cases after adequate anticoagulant therepy was introduced. Bilateral occlusion of ICA may be a relatively benign condition, if the patients are carefully controlled and treated. Mechanical properties. Fe at. The materials show a flow stress plateau at about MPa up to deg.

C for the material with 10 at. The high flow stresses compared to Fe- Al reference materials are partly due to the addition of Zr. The strain rate sensitivity of the flow stress was measured by stress relaxation and strain rate cycling tests. It is low up to deg. C and high between and deg. The microstructures of the undeformed materials are described in Part I of this paper.

Micrographs of the deformed specimens taken in a high-voltage electron microscope reveal that the deformation occurs mainly within the soft Fe- Al grains and in the Fe- Al component of the grain boundary eutectic. The deformation data are interpreted in terms of solution hardening from the Al solute, dynamic strain ageing due to the Cottrell effect of the same defects, the athermal stress component of elastic dislocation interactions, the Hall-Petch contribution from the grain size, and the strengthening effect of the grain boundary layers.

Electromigration-induced drift in damascene and plasma-etched Al Cu. Mass transport mechanisms in bamboo interconnects. For polycrystalline Al Cu , mass transport is well documented to occur through sequential stages : an incubation period attributed to Cu depletion beyond a critical length followed by the Al drift stage.

Using Blech-type test structures, mass transport in RIE lines was shown to proceed both by lattice and interfacial diffusion. The dominating mechanism depends on the Cu distribution in the line, as was evidenced by comparing as-patterned lattice EM and RTP-annealed interface EM samples.

The interfacial EM only occurs at metallic interfaces. In that case, Cu alloying was observed to retard Al interfacial mass transport, giving rise to an incubation time. Although the activation energy for the incubation time was found similar to the one controlling Al lattice drift, for which no incubation time was observed, lattice EM is preferred over interfacial EM because it is insensitive to enhancing geometrical effects upon scaling.

When comparing interfacial electromigration in RIE with bamboo damascene Al Cu , with the incubation time rate controlling for both, the higher EM threshold observed for damascene was shown to be insufficient to compensate for its significantly increased Cu depletion rate, contrary to the case of polycrystalline Al Cu interconnects.

Two factors were demonstrated to contribute. First, there are more metallic interfaces, intrinsically related to the use of wetting or barrier layers in recessed features. Second, specific to this study, the additional formation of Ti Al 3 at the trench sidewalls further enhanced the Cu depletion rate, and reduced the rate-controlling incubation time. A separate drift study on RIE via-type test structures indicated that it is very difficult to suppress interfacial mass transport in favor of lattice EM.

Central Nervous System malignancies often require stereotactic biopsy or biopsy for differential diagnosis, and for tumor staging and grading. Furthermore, stereotactic biopsy can be non-diagnostic or underestimate grading. Hence, there is a compelling need of new diagnostic biomarkers to avoid such invasive procedures.

Several biological markers have been proposed, but they can only identify specific prognostic subtype of Central Nervous System tumors, and none of them has found a standardized clinical application. Hsa-miR, , , and b were significantly differentially expressed among the above mentioned groups, allowing us to draw an hypothetical diagnostic chart for Central Nervous System malignancies. We included 15 healthy elderly subjects with normal cognitive performance as assessed by neuropsychological testing. Volumes of brain structures were assessed by applying an automated parcelation algorithm to three dimensional magnetization-prepared rapid gradient-echo T1-weighted images. Consistent with earlier reports, a significant degree of positive and negative coupling could be observed between cerebellar seeds and cerebral voxels.

Our findings indicate that brain amyloidosis in cognitively normal elderly subjects is associated with decreased network efficiency within the cerebro -cerebellar system. Currently, million adults suffer from diabetes worldwide, leading to tremendous disabilities and a great burden to families and society. Functional and structural MRIs have demonstrated that patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus T2DM exhibit abnormalities in brain regions in the cerebral cortex. However, the changes of cerebellar anatomical connections in diabetic patients remains unclear.

In the current study, diffusion tensor imaging deterministic tractography and statistical analysis were employed to investigate abnormal cerebellar anatomical connections in diabetic patients. This is the first study to investigate the altered cerebellar anatomical connectivity in T2DM patients. Decreased anatomical connections were found in the cerebellar and cerebro -cerebellar circuits of T2DM patients, providing valuable new insights into the potential neuro-pathophysiology of diabetes-related motor and cognitive deficits.

Elucidating the function of highly conserved regulatory sequences is a significant challenge in genomics today.

Certain intragenic highly conserved elements have been associated with regulating levels of core components of the spliceosome and alternative splicing of downstream genes. Here we identify mutations in one such element, a regulatory alternative exon of SNRPB as the cause of cerebro -costo-mandibular syndrome.

This exon contains a premature termination codon that triggers nonsense-mediated mRNA decay when included in the transcript. These mutations cause increased inclusion of the alternative exon and decreased overall expression of SNRPB. We provide evidence for the functional importance of this conserved intragenic element in the regulation of alternative splicing and development, and suggest that the evolution of such a regulatory mechanism has contributed to the complexity of mammalian development.

Whole-exome sequencing links TMCO1 defect syndrome with cerebro -facio-thoracic dysplasia. Whole-exome sequencing WES is a type of disruptive technology that has tremendous influence on human and clinical genetics research. An efficient and cost-effective method, WES is now widely used as a diagnostic tool for identifying the molecular basis of genetic syndromes that are often challenging to diagnose.

TMCO1 mutations cause craniofacial dysmorphism, skeletal anomalies characterized by multiple malformations of the vertebrae and ribs, and intellectual disability MIM A retrospective review revealed that clinical manifestations of both syndromes are very similar and overlap remarkably.

We propose that mutations of TMCO1 are not only responsible for craniofacial dysmorphism, skeletal anomalies and mental retardation syndrome but also for CFTD. In this study, pre-contrast T 2 weighted image and the postcontrast T 1 weighted image were, especially, compared. Out of 20 cases investigated, the clinical significance of Gd-DTPA was recognized clearly in 14 cases.

In the other 6 cases, some new information, though which did not give us the direct clinical significance, was also obtained. It was confirmed that T 2 weighted sequence without Gd-DTPA was the best in sensitivity, while T 1 weighted sequence after Gd-DTPA administration was superior in specificity of the information in making a discrimination between tumor and edema, gliosis and in the time-course of infarction.

Global dysrhythmia of cerebro -basal ganglia-cerebellar networks underlies motor tics following striatal disinhibition. Motor tics, a cardinal symptom of Tourette syndrome TS , are hypothesized to arise from abnormalities within cerebro -basal ganglia circuits. Yet noninvasive neuroimaging of TS has previously identified robust activation in the cerebellum. To date, electrophysiological properties of cerebellar activation and its role in basal ganglia-mediated tic expression remain unknown.

Following microinjections of bicuculline into the sensorimotor putamen, periodic tics occurred predominantly in the orofacial region, and a sizable number of cerebellar neurons showed phasic changes in activity associated with tic episodes. Critically, abnormal discharges of cerebellar cortex neurons and excitatory-type dentate neurons mostly preceded behavioral tic onset, indicating their central origins.

Latencies of pathological activity in the cerebellum and primary motor cortex substantially overlapped, suggesting that aberrant signals may be traveling along divergent pathways to these structures from the basal ganglia. Furthermore, the occurrence of tic movement was most closely associated with local field potential spikes in the cerebellum and primary motor cortex, implying that these structures may function as a gate to release overt tic movements.

These findings indicate that tic-generating networks in basal ganglia mediated tic disorders extend beyond classical cerebro -basal ganglia circuits, leading to global network dysrhythmia including cerebellar circuits. The complexes are hydrolysed by hydrothermally assisted sol-gel technique and gave hydrolyzed product.

Thermal studies of these products are made which favor the formation of multicomponent oxides. The studies reveal that salicylate derivatives are polymeric in nature and low susceptible to hydrolysis as compared to parent compound and may prove excellent precursors for the mixed metal oxides.

To explore the factors influencing cardio- cerebro vascular death events among people over 40 years of age in Shandong area, China. Baseline survey was carried out in A total number of 11, adults over 40 years old had been studied in Shandong province.

Data on cardiocerebro death was collected. The correlation between influencing factors and cardio- cerebro vascular death events was analyzed by Cox regression model. Totally, cardio- cerebro death events occurred among the 11, subjects during the 8-year follow-up study. Cardio- cerebro death events were related to systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, smoking, stroke history and age.

Data from Cox regression analysis showed that the relative risk RR for cardio- cerebro vascular death events increased by 2. When systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure increased by every 10 mm Hg, the relative risk for cardio- cerebro vascular death events increased by 1.

However, the predictive values of the influencing factors for cardio- cerebro vascular death were different among population of different years of age. The relative risk for cardio- cerebro vascular death events increased by 1. However, the effect was taken place by systolic blood pressure in years old population, with a relative risk of 1.

Age seemed the only significant factor for cardio- cerebro vascular death events on population aged more than 75 years old. Conclusion The predictive values of the risk factors were different among age groups. The different. Impurity states in Al 2O3. Electron-hole droplets in Ge. The transmission of Mn-doped samples of Al 2 O 3 was measured in the frequency range from 3 to 30 cm -1 in applied magnetic fields up to 50 kG. Absorption lines were observed due to both ground and excited state transitions.

Polarization measurements established that these absorption lines were due to electric dipole transitions. A phenomenological model based on an electronic Hamiltonian was developed which successfully describes the data. The empirically determined trigonal field and spin-orbit quenching parameters of this model are 0.

This quenching is attributed to the dynamic Jahn--Teller interaction. The observed absorption is in good agreement with measurements by Vavilov and other workers. A theoretical model which includes both intraband and interband contributions to the dielectric constant in the Rayleigh limit of Mie theory is used to describe the observed lineshape.

The lineshape at zero applied field was calculated in the large sphere limit of Mie theory including intraband terms and a zero-strain interband term. Qualitative agreement with experiment was obtained. The peak absorption shifted quadratically with applied magnetic field and the total plasma absorption increased. No oscillatory structure was observed in the field-dependence of the total absorption.

Rac-1 as a new therapeutic target in cerebro - and cardio-vascular diseases. Growing evidence indicates that overproduction of reactive oxygen species ROS plays a prominent role in the development of cardio- and cerebro -vascular diseases.

Among the mechanisms identified to produce oxidative stress in the vascular wall, those mediated by membrane-bound NAD P H oxidases represent a major one. Vascular NAD P H oxidase contains the membrane-bound subunits Nox1, Nox2 gp91phox , Nox4 and p22phox, the catalytic site of the oxidase, and the cytosolic components p47phox and p67phox.

Several molecular and cellular studies have reported the involvement of Rac1 in different cardiovascular pathologies, such as vascular smooth muscle proliferation, cardiomyocyte hypertrophy, endothelial cell shape change, atherosclerosis and endothelial dysfunction in hypertension.

In addition, increased activation of NADPH oxidase by Rac1 has been reported in animals and humans after myocardial infarction and heart failure. In addition, thrombotic events are an important step in the onset of cardio- and cerebrovascular diseases. Rac1 has been found involved also in platelet activation, inducing actin polymerization and lamellipodia formation, which are necessary steps for platelet aggregation.

Taken together, the evidence candidates Rac1 as a new pharmacological target of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Although the involvement of Rac1 in the beneficial pleiotropic effects of drugs such as statins is well known, and the onset of numerous side effects has raised concern for the.

Mechanisms underlying hypoxia-induced neuronal adaptation have not been fully elucidated. In contrast glucose oxidation was reduced significantly in hypoxia-treated neurons, even when expressed relative to total cellular protein, which correlated with the reduced activities of the measured mitochondrial enzymes. The results suggest that surviving neurons adapt to prolonged hypoxia by up-regulation of glycolysis and down-regulation of oxidative energy metabolism, similar to certain other cell types.

The factors leading to adaptation and survival for some neurons but not others remain to be determined. A case of severe type of cerebro -costo-mandibular syndrome. Full Text Available Introduction. Cerebro -costo-mandibular syndrome CCMS is a rare disorder, with only 75 cases described in the literature to date. CCMS is characterized by association of micrognathia and specific multiple rib defects. It is accompanied by mental deficiency in considerable number of cases.

Sometimes, there are associated anomalies and problems, such as spine deformities, brain, heart, kidney or ear anomalies, feeding difficulties, delayed psychomotor development, and growth impairment. These cases are referred to as severe types of CCMS.

Case Outline. In this paper we present a female infant with severe type of CCMS. Diagnosis was established in the first day of life, based on micrognathia and findings of posterior rib-gap defects on the chest X-ray, accompanied by dyspnea. Progressive severe respiratory insufficiency caused by chest and air-way deformities and exacerbated by episodes of pneumonia, led to respiratory failure and death at the age of 7. CCMS should be considered in every infant with micrognathia and rib-gap defects on chest X-ray.

Myelin basic protein determination in cerebro -spinal fluid of children with tuberculous meningitis. Myelin basic protein MBP , an indicator of neural tissue damage in cerebro -spinal fluid, was studied in patients with tuberculous meningitis TBM. The cutoff point was thus calculated to be This is the first study to report that long working hours could be a predictor with good discrimination and high specificity of approval of WR-CVD cases. In Korea, long working hours and widespread chronic overload at work are recognized as a social problem.

Our study results suggest an appropriate cutoff for working hours as an indicator of chronic overload for the purpose of approving claims of WR-CVD. Furthermore, these results could contribute to improving the consistency of evaluation. The analysis of the contrast enhanced lesions on cerebro -vascular diseases.

However, it is difficult to differentiate these two conditions only by contrast enhanced CT. We employed dynamic CT DCT to analyse these lesions with respect to the patterns of time-density curve and peak height PH of the curve upon the theoretical basis that flattening of the latter part of the time-density curve reflected the degree of BBB disruption and PH reflected the CBV. In all cases of hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage 11 cases , the contrast enhanced lesion around the hematoma showed marked BBB disruption according to the results of DCT.

However, all contrast enhanced lesions with increased PH were associated with hemorrhagic infarction. Thus, the precise analysis of DCT provides appropriate therapeutic schedules by predicting the occurrence of hemorrhagic infarction. Long working hours and work-related cerebro -cardiovascular disease in Korea.

The aim of the present study was to determine a good discriminatory cutoff for long working hours as a surrogate of chronic overload at work, which is associated with the approval of workers' compensation claims for work-related cerebro -cardiovascular disease WR-CVD in Korea. The discrimination of long working hours in predicting approval of worker's compensation pertaining to WR-CVD was compared across cases. Pratiques Psychologiques , 13 2 : A mathematical model is first developed to explain the mechanisms that contribute to the process of recovery of microwave energy in the range of power found in the ambient microwave energy harvesting applications.

An evaluation of this model is made using simulation results and then measurements results from three prototypes developed under this M. The results show an excellent agreement between the three methods. The developed model includes losses in the parasitic components of the non-linear element used for the rectification of energy as well as the impedance matching network insertion losses.

Based on this model, two possible ways of improving the efficiency of ambient microwave power rectifiers at the power levels found in the AMEH are explored. In this work, it is considered that the AMEH takes place within the range of powers with a peak value of dBm, however at average power levels well below this threshold. First, a cooperative hybrid circuit of ambient energy harvesting is presented where collected microwave and mechanical energies are converted in a cooperative manner through a single nonlinear component.

Theory, simulations and measurements show that the total power recovered by the proposed scheme can provide up to twice the efficiency of a circuit combining the output of two independent harvesters.

Then, a work demonstrating for the first time that the limitations of a Schottky diode harvester can be overcome by using backward tunnel diodes is presented. It is shown that the limitation reached by the Schottky diodes half a century ago can be overcome thanks to a higher current responsivity obtained through tunneling transport.

The measured power recovery efficiency was equal to Finally, an application of microwave power transfer is presented. A rectenna operating at 94 GHz is built and measured, an energy conversion efficiency equal to This rectenna is proposed as an alternative power source for microrobots, which may not use batteries due to their small size and light weight. Contraction et filamentation des decharges micro-ondes entretenues a la pression atmospherique: Application a la detoxication des gaz a effet de serre.

The remediation of greenhouse gases, such as perfluorinated compounds PFCs , constitutes a major environmental concern. Plasmas operating at atmospheric pressure offer an efficient technology for the control of toxic and greenhouse gas emission. The two main objectives of the thesis were to investigate the mechanisms of contraction and filamentation in atmospheric-pressure microwave discharges, and to examine their influence on the plasma abatement process of PFC gases in these discharges.

The finite thermal conductivity of the gas discharge is responsible for the gas nonuniform heating leading to a contracted discharge column. The gas thermal conductivity and the penetration depth of the microwave electric field in the plasma are shown to set the value of the plasma radius.

The degree of contraction and filamentation of microwave discharges can be controlled, and even reduced, by modulating adequately the incident microwave power. The relaxation times of heat conduction and heat release are actually observed to be of the same magnitude, and correspond to the modulation period for which the discharge shows less contraction.

PFC molecules are eliminated through their fragmentation by inelastic collisions with electrons and the subsequent oxidation of these fragments. Reformation of PFC molecules is the main process limiting the abatement efficiency in atmospheric-pressure microwave discharges.

As a result of discharge radial contraction, a relative "colder" space between the plasma filament and the discharge tube wall favors PFC reformation and, therefore, lowers the destruction efficiency. The PFC destruction efficiency is found to increase with absorbed microwave power.

Surface-wave microwave discharges sustained at atmospheric pressure prove to be an efficient and ecological solution for emission reduction of greenhouse gases. It outlines the characteristics and procedures of the program; the nature,…. Nationale Entwicklungen und internationale Beziehungen im Jahrhundert Acta Historica Astronomiae Vol. The book contains 13 articles on astronomical topics covering the 19th and 20th centuries.

The first paper is by Guenther Oestmann and deals with contemporary assessments of Johann Hieronymus Schroeter's astronomical works and with later judgements of the scientific importance and significance of his observations as seen by astronomers and historians. This report is complemented by a second article on Schroeter's ft reflector in Lilienthal near Bremen.

To this end, author Felix Luehning has constructed a scale model of the telescope, and shows how the building of a model brings a deeper understanding of function and handling of this instrument. This brings us to a third paper on telescope building in Lilienthal: Hans-Joachim Leue describes the cooperation of Johann Hieronymus Schroeter and Johann Gottlieb Schrader in developing a white reflecting metal alloy for use as telescope mirror.

The fourth article, by Klaus Schillinger, describes on the basis of archival documents the aquisition history of the Herschel telescopes, including telescope quality check, repair and building. Peter Brosche, in the fifth paper, discusses the rediscovery of Ceres in December, a discovery that was the result of the combined efforts of a theoretician Gauss and an observer Zach.

Juergen Hamel's paper is based on previously unused archival sources and discusses the outstanding role played by H. Schumacher , editor of the Astronomische Nachrichten in the communication between astronomers in his days, when his working place at Altona still belonged to the kingdom of Denmark. This paper is followed by a second one by the same author and deals with the correspondence of H. Schumacher and H C. Oersted and shows how intense and diverse their cooperation was.

In a subsequent paper, Wolfgang Kokott describes the role of the Astronomisches Jahrbuch published from by the Royal Academy of Sciences at Berlin , a ranking international publication, with Bode's modest Berlin Observatory serving as a clearinghouse of information originating from virtually all European countries. Peter Habison describes the contribution of Leo de Ball , Director of the Kuffner Observatory in Vienna to international astronomy. Internationalization in astronomy is also discussed in a following paper by Gudrun Wolfschmidt on the establishment of the Vereinigte Astronomische Gesellschaft, the international Astronomische Gesellschaft in and finally the International Astronomical Union in In the second but last paper of the book, Hilmar Duerbeck describes the history of the Chilean National Observatory, beginning with its origins out of Gilliss' US Naval Expedition to the Southern Hemisphere in , over its directors Moesta, Vergara, Obrecht and Ristenpart, to the middle of the 20th century.

The paper also includes the astronomical development at the Universidad Catolica and various international expeditions, which aimed at the observations of solar eclipses, the Venus transit of , and the Mars opposition of An overview of the evolution and the actual state of the international observatories Cerro Tololo, La Silla and Paranal, as well as Las Campanas is also given.

The aim of this study was to describe the proportion of liver-related diseases LRDs as a cause of death in HIV-infected patients in France and to compare the results with data from our five previous surveys. Results were compared with those of previous cross-sectional surveys conducted since using the same design.

Eighty per cent of patients who died from LRDs had chronic hepatitis C, The proportion of deaths and the mortality rate attributable to LRDs significantly increased between and from 1. The proportion of LRDs among causes of death in HIV-infected patients seems recently to have reached a plateau after a rapid increase during the decade LRDs remain a leading cause of death in this population, mainly as a result of hepatitis C virus HCV coinfection, HCC representing almost half of liver-related causes of death.

Polylactic acid vs. The aim of the study was to demonstrate the noninferiority of polyacrylamide hydrogel PH vs. A randomized, blinded, multicentre, noninferiority week study was carried out. Patients with facial lipoatrophy were randomly assigned to receive intradermal injections with PH or PLA, and were blinded to the filler.

The primary efficacy endpoint was patient satisfaction at week 48 assessed using a visual analogue scale score VAS. Secondary efficacy end-points included cheek thickness and skin-fold, lipoatrophy grading and quality of life. Safety was assessed by the reporting of adverse events. Mean VAS increased from 2. Cheek thickness and skin-fold increases and lipoatrophy improvement were similar in the two arms. Quality of life remained unchanged or improved depending on the questionnaire used.

Four patients in the PH arm developed severe inflammatory nodules, a median of 17 months after the last injection. PH and PLA have similar efficacies in the treatment of facial lipoatrophy, but PH may be associated with more delayed inflammatory nodules.

Tables rondes. A biosimilar is a biological medicinal product claimed to be similar to a reference biological medicinal product. Its development plan includes studies comparing it with the reference product in order to confirm its similarity in terms of quality, preclinical safety, clinical efficacy, and clinical safety, including immunogenicity.

Biosimilars differ from generics both in their molecular complexity and in the specific requirements that apply to them. Since patents on many biological medicinal products will expire within the next 5 years in major therapeutic areas such as oncology, rheumatology and gastroenterology and as those products are so costly to the French national health insurance system, the availability of biosimilars would have a considerable economic impact.

The round table has issued a number of recommendations intended to ensure that the upcoming arrival of biosimilars on the market is a success, in which prescribing physicians would have a central role in informing and reassuring patients, an efficient monitoring of the patients treated with biologicals would be set up and time to market for biosimilars would be speeded up. In the context of a clinical trial to prevent HIV vertical transmission, HIV counselling and testing was offered systematically to women attending antenatal clinics. Informed consent was obtained and test results were given anonymously. Multiple logistic regression was performed to identify factors associated with refusal for testing and failure to return for test results.

A total of pregnant women were interviewed from January to September In the two sites, the counsellors themselves and high educational level of the women appeared to be related to refusal of the test, whereas last trimester gestation was associated with failure to return for test results.

In Abidjan, foreigners and employees were more likely to refuse testing, and HIV-infected women were three times less likely to return for results than uninfected women. Future implementation of interventions to reduce vertical transmission of HIV that require antenatal HIV testing and counselling will have to solve issue of acceptability of HIV testing by pregnant women.

Sheared velocity flows as a source of pressure anisotropy in low collisionality plasmas.

Non-Maxwellian metaequilibrium states may exist in low-collisionality plasmas as evidenced by direct particle distributions and indirect e. These are directly observed in the solar wind e. By including the full pressure tensor dynamics in a fluid plasma model, we show that a sheared velocity field can provide an effective mechanism that makes an initial isotropic state anisotropic. We discuss how the propagation of magneto-elastic waves can affect the pressure tensor anisotropization and the small scale formation that arise from the interplay between the gyrotropic terms due to the magnetic field and the flow vorticity and the non-gyropropic effect of the flow strain tensor.

We support this analysis by a numerical integration of the nonlinear equations describing the pressure tensor evolution. This anisotropization mechanism might provide a good candidate for the understanding of the observed correlation between the presence of a sheared velocity flow and the signature of pressure anisotropies which are not yet explained within the standard models based e. Examples of these signatures are provided e. Marsch et al. Khotyainstev at el.

Privacy Laws and Biobanking in Germany.

Colloid Journal. Plant and Soil.

Si, S.

It was also revealed that the interaction increased from the same cerebellar region to the primary motor area. Modality specificity in the cerebro -cerebellar neurocircuitry during working memory. Previous studies have suggested cerebro -cerebellar circuitry in working memory. The present fMRI study aims to distinguish differential cerebro -cerebellar activation patterns in verbal and visual working memory, and employs a quantitative analysis to deterimine lateralization of the activation patterns observed. In contrast, a distributed network of bilateral inferior frontal and inferior temporal areas, and bilateral superior lobule VI and inferior lobule VIIB cerebellar areas, was recruited during visual working memory.

At pH 2.

The effects of different reaction parameters such as catalyst activity, dosage and solution pH on the decolorization of PCS were assessed. The degradation efficiency of PCS increases as pH decreases, exhibiting a maximum efficiency at pH 3. The recycled catalyst was capable of repeating three runs without a significant decrease in treatment efficiency, and this demonstrated the stability and reusability of catalyst.

Complete absence of rib ossification, micrognathia and ear anomalies: extreme expression of cerebro -costo-mandibular syndrome?

Although more cases need to be tested, we identified a diagnostic Cerebro -Spinal Fluid microRNA signature with good perspectives for future diagnostic clinical applications.

Changes in the cerebellar and cerebro -cerebellar circuit in type 2 diabetes.

Diagnosis and differential diagnosis of cerebro -vascular malformations by CT.
